About Dr Mark Dimitri

Dr Mark Dimitri

Mark is a triple-qualified specialist in respiratory, sleep, and general and acute care medicine. Deeply inspired by his late mum, Susan, he believes there is a vast difference between “healing” patients and “treating” patients. Mark always takes the time to understand his patients’ needs and treats each patient with the same compassion and attention he would offer his own family.

‍As a respiratory physician, Mark has a strong clinical focus on the workup of breathlessness, airway disease, and interstitial lung disease, as well as the early detection and treatment of lung cancer. He is drawn to the interplay between psychology and the perception of breathlessness and is passionate about exploring this with his patients.

Mark is a keen advocate for sleep as a pillar of health. As a sleep physician, Mark has a specific interest in the detection and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea. More broadly, Mark is fascinated by the intersection between sleep physiology and philosophy, including the nature and function of dreams.

As a generalist, Mark approaches health holistically, recognising the interconnection between biology, psychology, and social context. This approach has been shaped by Mark’s extensive work in rural and regional settings, including Christmas Island and outreach clinics linked to the Royal Darwin Hospital. He is passionate about indigenous health and providing culturally sensitive care.

Mark is an avid educator and mentor. He has a long history of teaching across all levels of training, from medical students and junior doctors to specialist trainees, nurses, allied health professionals and community groups.

Having received multiple awards for teaching, Mark is also deeply committed to patient education. He understands that education takes time and ensures that he allows sufficient time in each consultation to empower his patients to understand their health and actively participate in shared decision-making.

Mark is a champion for healthcare accessibility.  With his brother, in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark founded a young medical company focusing on expanding access to infection control in settings with limited infrastructure and resources, and first responder scenarios. This ongoing body of work reflects his broader dedication to pioneering healthcare equality and innovation.

Outside of medicine, Mark is a passionate musician and plays in a roots band with two best friends. He is trained in percussion, including drums and eastern hand percussive instruments. Mark is deeply drawn to the healing power of music, both as a musician and as a listener.
